Do You Believe in the Law of Attraction?

What level of belief do you have in the law of attraction, that is, your ability to attract into your life, through your thoughts, emotions and informed actions, what you most desire? Most of us have had an experience of synchronicity where something shows up just when we need it or just the way we wanted it to. Many of us have had the experience of desiring something strongly and then having it happen just like we imagined. But we often don't generalize that into a strongly held belief.

The law of attraction works, but just I saying that it is true, doesn't necessarily mean you believe it. The thing is, if I asked you to look at your current thoughts and feelings and your current life, I bet they are a match. This is a kind of proof of the law of attraction working in yhour life. For example, if you are worried about money, feeling desperate about bills, feeling anxious and looking at how little you have, this is most likely mirrored by a lack of money in your life. Now, you probably will say, yes, but because I am out of money, I feel those things. I propose that it is the opposite. Because you feel those things, you lack money. The tricky thing is you don't believe that your present reality was brought into being by your thoughts and feelings.

I propose that you give the law of attraction the benefit of the doubt. Choose something you want, start practicing changing your thoughts and feelings to positive, energizing ones, and notice what happens. Stay open to the possibility that this will bring you what you want. Allow it into your life.

Keep a manifestation log; a diary of what you desire, how you are doing at keeping your thoughts and feelings positive, how you are doing at noticing signs from the Universe or God that you are to take action, and how open you are to receiving what you asked for. Keep a daily record of what is occuring around this one desire. As you practice, you will find that your success rate goes up. As you manifest each new desire, your confidence in this process will go up. Try it for 30 days and see what happens. Let me know.

I read the Newsweek article, "Decoding the Secret" this week. Other than your blog, this is the only thing I have read about the law of attraction. So obviously I don't know much about it, but the little I have read about it doesn't sound good at all.

There are tons of blogs, attraction sites, books, videos etc out on the law of attraction. It's not new. It's been around for a long time. The only way to really understand it is to read a book or take a class and to try it yourself. See if you can make something happen in your own life. Go to http://www.lifeunfolds.com/books.htm to see some recommended books on the subject.

I got the book "The Secret" yesterday and read the first chapter. Honestly, it sounds like so much nonsense. There were many unsupported, undocumented statements and claims in the first chapter. The pseudoscientific statements used to prop up the claims were wholly unconvincing, which is likely why near the end of the first chapter we find admonitions not to worry if you don't understand how it works. There is nothing of scientific substance to back up the claims.

I believe thoughts are important, and watching our thoughts is an important practice. But the notion that our thoughts can operate to exert a physical (magnetic) force on other objects and people to "attract" them is sheer nonsense from a scientific standpoint. One is free to believe it, just as one is free to believe in astrology. But it isn't science.

So if a person were to see if they can "make something happen" in their lives, what would that prove?

Another question I have is, what does the "law of attraction" have to offer to those who are suffering, that they brought it on themselves because they weren't thinking properly? If I believe that, why should I try to alleviate suffering by anything other than telling them to think better thoughts? If you buy into the law of attraction and disaster strikes, what comfort is this law going to give you? The example from the first chapter of the gay man with homophobic co-workers was galling. Why should I do anything to fight injustice and support human rights? The fault is with the victims, according to the law of attraction.

Thanks so much for your comments. I have not read the book, The Secret, have only seen the movie. However, I have read more than a dozen other books both about LOA and about the underlying physics and biology and psychology. First let me say, that science, especially quantum physics and neuro-biology, does offer "supporting" evidence that the LOA works, but does not prove it, at least as far as I'm concerned. That does not make it false. Science advances our knowledge but should not limit our knowledge about what we experience and know to be true for ourselves. Second the LOA is only part of what makes up our lives. There are many forces, including what some call the LOA, that work to create what we experience. The LOA is easy to read about, but not so easy to accurately control. Having positive thoughts and feelings that align with our desires or goals is easier said than done. We all have limiting beliefs (false beliefs) and patterns that inhibit a free flow of energy. What I have found to be true for me is that when I consistently have more positive thoughts and feelings in an area of my life, it improves. It gets better, and I become happier. When I consistently worry and feel anxious or look at something negatively, negative events happen that "confirm" my thoughts and feelings. The only way I know of to "prove" that this works is to practice it yourself and see what happens. What does the LOA offer those who are suffering? First it offers a way out of suffering. Being empowered to change your own life is truly awesome. However, I would not tell an alcoholic living on the streets to just be positive. That shows an incredible lack of understanding of what got them there. Not every one is open to learning something new, is not open to accepting personal responsibility for what they have created, and is not able to tame the inner gremlins that pursue them. Changing physical manifestations (illness, addictions, body shape) is among the most difficult to change because of the body's own chemical and energetic ways of taking care of the body. Does not mean it can't be done, but it is more challenging. You choose to fight injustice or to help others because it is your nature, your psychology, your purpose to do so. All of us have experienced a helping hand from others that started us on the road to a better life or to a new way of seeing things. And teaching others that their thoughts and feelings help to create what they experience can make a huge difference in the happiness others experience.
